News: What I'm working on now

I am working on my fourth novel, a psychological mystery fantasy set in a country somewhat like Bhutan.  With fairies.

Where I’ll be this Fall

All over town, it seems.

First up, I’ll be at the Royal Sarcophagus Society’s booth at The Word on the Street on September 27th, Queen’s Park, Toronto.

Then, we dive right into the Scary Monster Beautiful show by my friends at The House of Pomegranates. This 9-day show will feature art by Sarah Pomegranate and Magda Trzaski, fashions by Elizabeth Pomegranate, photographs by Jowita Bydlowiska, music by Kalte and DJ Roomtone and a special Gothic & Lolita Tea Party featuring the girls of CyanideNoire. I’ll be reading during the “Beautiful Monsters” literary night on October 16, along with Sandra Kasturi, Liisa Ladouceur, Andrew Pyper and more. This won’t be like any reading you’ve ever been to, trust me. Sarah’s original illustration for Chrysanthemum Shadows plus some new art for a manga version of A Terrible Beauty will also be on display. Tickets for the reading and other events, plus more information on the whole show, are available at www.houseofpomegranates.com.

Finally, on October 25th, I’ll be at the Bizarre of the Bazaar, hanging out at the Royal Sarcophagus Society Booth. Last year’s event was a huge success and this year’s bazaar, under the direction of the fine folks at Plastik Wrap, should be even better. June 2009

My apologies for the extremely long time it's taken me to update this site. Technological challenges, a demanding work schedule and sheer inertia were the main culprits. But there are changes underway ...

This lovely new site design is just the first step to my joining the current century so stay tuned for more transformations.

I've signed up to participate in the AWOL Gallery Square Foot Show again and will be doing a mosaic of either Louise Brooks or a flaming heart. Come to the show in August and see which one it was.

Some personal resolutions will, I hope, give me more time and energy to write and perhaps I'll have better news to report on that front soon.

If you're in Toronto, come by the House of Pomegranates Press booth at the Small Press Fair on June 13th, check out the current books and say hello.

September 2008

The new book is off at the printers, but here's a sneak preview of the cover and one of the illustrations.  If you're in Toronto, come see me at The Word on the Street at the Royal Sarcophagus Society booth and be sure to check out the "Bazaar of the Bizarre" on October 19th.

August 2008

No news on the novel but several other creative ventures are coming to fruition.

As part of my research for the novel, I took a course in mosaics and found I enjoyed it.  My project for this summer was a sugar skull and, as added incentive, I signed up for the Square Foot Show at the AWOL Gallery.  Much to my surprise, someone bought the piece.  You can see if below and find out more about the event via the link.

WELCOME TO AWOL GALLERY & STUDIOS

My friends at The House of Pomegranates Press have always wanted to do an illustrated version of the Japanese diary section of Blood and Chyrsanthemums and now it's finally happening.  The book will be available this fall for The Word on the Street in Toronto.  You'll also be able to order through The Royal Sarcophagus Society store (http://www.therss.com/) and I'll be at the RSS "Bazaar of the Bizarre" on October 19th.   As with Discovering Japan, there will be both regular and hand-bound editions available.

December 2007

The big news for 2007 was the publication of my short story collection, containing almost all the short stories I've written, some memories and comments about each and an excerpt from "Cold Hillside", the novel in in progress.  There's a trade paperback version with the cover you see below and a limited number of hand-bound hardcover copies created by David Keyes.  There are a few copies available at Bakka Phoenix Books in Toronto or you can order on-line through the Royal Sarcophagus Society (see link below).

On the novel front, this year was even slower than last year, despite the fact that the lovely sex and death parts were on the agenda.  Here's hoping for a better 2008.

June 2007

No substantial progress on the novel but there will be a short story collection published by The House of Pomegranates, an imprint of the Royal Sarcophagus Society Press.  This will include all my previous short stories, plus an excerpt from the new novel and likely a story or two that have never found homes.  And possibly a CD, if the stars align.  Stay tuned to the RSS web site http://www.therss.com/ for more news.  The launch is scheduled for September 2007 and the book will be available at the RSS booth at The Word on the Street.

January 2007

Not a very productive year, sad to say.  Work demands kept me busy and drained a good portion of my energy.  The only good news is that there is the beginning of a plan to publishing a short story collection with a small press.  I promise to update my web site once the final plans are in place.

February 2006

Things proceed at a reasonable pace.  I survived my first public reading from the work in progress at "Wanderlust: Erotic tales form Strange Lands", a RSS event.

I was the "strange lands" part.

October 2005

I wish I could say I'm done, but I'm not...

The good news is that I have been making my targets of 25,000 words a year, have passed the 100,000 word mark and have lots more story to go.  There are still lots of unanswered questions - and I've left one character sitting in an archive for far too long - but it seems possible to finish it someday.  Then I'll likely have to rewrite it, but there you go.

June 2004

My apologies for the delay in updating this site.  Sheer laziness in reinstalling Front Page is my only excuse.  After my October 2003 post about how unproductive I'd been, things improved considerably.  I signed up for "National Novel Writing Month", the goal of which is to spur people to write a 50,000 word new novel in the month of November.  Needless to say, this was impossible for me, so I set a goal of 10,000 words.  The necessity to churn out 200 words a day and post my total on the web site helped turn off my nasty internal editor and I made my target.  I then wrote 5,000 more words in December and am on target so far in 2004.

The original plan was to be finished the first draft by the end of this year but, as I'm at about 85,000 words and there is a good deal more than 15,000 more words of story, I suspect it might take longer.

But I take what I can get.
